Today, I'm grateful.
Really, truly grateful - for all my blessings. {It's not even thanksgiving!}
Monday, I took Matthew in for the first of many tests with the neurologist. At the end of 4 hours of testing (where I was separated from Matt for the majority of the time), they were able to tell us for sure that Matt does not have Aspberger's or Autism of any degree.
It was a relief! I knew the likelihood of him having either condition was unlikely, but still - when they say there are small signs and they just want to rule them out, you worry. (Or at least I do).
We've only gotten through the preliminary testing. We have two more long sessions to go. But we've been given a preliminary diagnosis of:
*sleep disorder (not being able to regulated and self-quiet himself during the night - it also leaks into the day and not being able to calm himself)
*disruptive behavior disorder (have to laugh at this...I was talking with Melanie and said somewhat flippantly - "don't all kids have this?!" - at least all the boys I know do! but we'll at least be able to get more information and better our parenting techniques - so they can help Matt!)
*motor disorder (Matt lacks the fine motor skills...we'll need to pursue occupational therapy to help him remedy this...)
But still! Of all the conditions, disorders, diseases that are out there....we got a mild bunch. I'm so grateful to have good doctors and specialists who can answer my questions - about how Matt's mind works. How we can best serve him as parents. How we can help him succeed in school....
I'm just so grateful. They wouldn't have had all this information or any coping strategies or techniques if this had happened 50 years ago...let alone 100 years ago! I'm so glad I was pointed in the right direction - glad for all the help. We're nowhere near completed - but at least we're going in the right direction!

All I can say is wheww and wow. Love you Liz. Those boys are SO lucky to have you and Stann as their parents!
Sounds normal to me...for the fine motor skills,have him get down and crawl on his hands and knees everyday...that's why kids need to crawl when they are little, that's how they develop their fine motor skills etc...hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend.
ok.... first off, boys will be boys. I have learned a lot in this last year about boys. My son has worried us because he is always getting in trouble and people commented on maybe (asburgers... spell?) or autism or ADD, or whatever is out there.. But he doesn't... kids will be kids and every kid is different.. so whatever someone wants to call it, it's called growing up.. Anyway I am a little touchy on this subject... I have learned early with our oldest that we just let him grow and learn the way he has to grow and learn. That's all that we parents can do.. .... on a lighter note.. we are planning a trip to Yellowstone with Brad and Carin and Mom and Dad... you guys should come with us :) the night of the 17th 18 19 and come home the 20th in the morning :)
BECCA...I need an invite to your blog! :)
