Our ward recently had a Ward Activity/Primary Activity. The theme for Primary this year is "I know the scriptures are true" and so, combining that theme with another well known scripture "Feast upon the words of Christ" and you have the basis for our ward's activity.
We were asked to come up with an edible display from the scriptures. AKA..."Make" a scripture story come to life, by replicating it with food. Then, we were going to meet with the ward and do it over again there too...but we were supposed to bring the scriptures to life - and I think we did a pretty good job. :)
The boys picked our story....we decided to re-create Nephi's Journey to the Promised Land.
The boys here....smiling. They helped me bake the cake, and make all the "Nephites" (yeah, I know...there'd be Lamanites there too...but since I didn't want to confuse the boys any more than I have already with all the scripture stories we've been reading...we went with Nephites.)
The cake was yellow and chocolate....(yum!) it had 4 layers....frosted with chocolate frosting, we used black licorice as "beams" for the boat...mini twixes as the "rail" or "edge", a fruit roll-up as the sail, chopsticks from our favorite chinese restaurant as the mast....and sixlets as the "seeds" and "fruit" they brought along. All the little Nephites are made out of marzipan.
FYI...they look like little weebles.
See what I mean? The boys helped me make them....so they're really not the best...but we had the best time making them. :)
We even made a little liahona - out of marzipan - so much fun!
Our ocean was shredded coconut we dyed blue.
We had such a fun time at this activity!! Our table (when we got there) veered from the assigned scripture - because we had mostly boys and I was outnumbered in my protests. Instead of bringing "Jonah and the Whale" to life....we brought the massive carnage of "Ammon guarding King Lamoni's sheep" to life. {LOL}
It was a bloody, gorey piece. Soooo much red dye!
But all the boys had fun....and we had fun helping them. :)
I loved this activity - it really helped bring the scriptures to life for my kids!!!
